二者都有转折的意思，细微区别有：
一、转折语气上不同：
1、but语气上是直接的,虽然...但是…；while语气上是婉转的,虽然...然而...
例句：
1、虽然老师给他打了及格分,但是他在考卷上的作答是一团糟.
He got 60 points,but his answer is really a mass.
2、虽然他是全面的发展的总体上来看,然而学习当中还是有一些不足之处.
His performance is good,while still got some faults in studying.
二、有时表达意思不同
while的意思是“当...的时候，虽然”；but的意思是“但是”。
例句：
1、While I was watching TV, the bell rang.
当我看电视时，铃响了。
2、Please excuse me, but there is something I must say
不好意思，但有些话我必须说。
三、While作并列连词用,意思为“而,然而”,表对比.而but表转折.
例句：
1、Some people waste food while others haven't enough.
有些人很费粮食,然而有些人却吃不饱.
while这里即表示对比有表示转折!
2、PHoney is sweet,but the bee stings.
蜂蜜很甜,但蜜蜂有刺蜇人。
while在表示“然而”之意时，与but“但是”意思相近，如果不加以区分，容易混淆。它们的区别在于：
1.while “然而、而”，重点对二者进行对比，突出不同之处。
突出某人或某物某地是某种情况，而其他人、物或地方则是另外一种情况。
While可在句首或句中
Boys prefer basketball while girls prefer dolls.男孩子们更喜欢篮球，而女孩子们更喜欢玩具娃娃。
While in England people drive on the left, in China they drive on the right.在中国人们靠右行驶，而在英国人们靠左行驶。
Some people like sandwiches while others don’t.有人喜欢三明治，而有人则不喜欢。
2.but“但是”，强调前后转折的关系，转折意味比较重。
But不放在句首
The task is difficult, but I can complete it.虽然这项任务艰难，但是我能够完成。
I invited Mandy to the party, but he didn’t come.我邀请了曼迪来派对，但是他没有来。
I like her music, but I don’t like her.我喜欢她的音乐，但是我不喜欢她
