This quietly thought-provoking film from Mike Leigh won the Palme d’Or in 1996 for its unflinchingly realist look at what happens when children are unwanted or resented; when children don’t have the upbringing they should; when children are abandoned by their parents; when children are adopted by people from a completely different background – and how these factors affect their lives and future prospects. Secrets and Lies follows a young woman as she decides to search for her birth mother after the death of her adoptive parents and the disruption this causes to someone who had almost forgotten all about her. Looking at the secrets a family keeps from each other – often with the intention of shielding other people from shock or sadness – this film drops quite a few domestic bombshells, and shows how we tend to judge other people based on our own assessment of a situation we often know very little about.

A man who has made the decision to commit suicide, finds he is unable to go through with it until he finds somebody willing to throw earth on his body. He spends a whole night driving around the streets of Tehran searching for an accomplice. He is willing to pay for the job, but is anyone willing to accept? He is prepared. He has already dug the grave – he just needs somebody to cover his body after he has done the deed. He meets different people, with different opinions about his impending suicide. Some have different moral attitudes, lecturing him and some have different personal stories, offering affirmation – but will any of them persuade him not to go through with his grim intention? This film celebrates the incredible diversity of life, and how death is inescapably part of the daily fabric of our lives; walking amongst us, cruising the streets; it is our own, devoted accomplice.

肥胖的护士长玛莎（Shirley Stoler 饰）全部的生活不过是沉闷的工作加上照顾依赖感强烈但又时常抱怨的母亲，对所谓的爱情，她已不抱太大希望，直到她通过交友中心与一位纽约的小进口商雷（Tony Lo Bianco 饰）书信往来，两人确定了爱情关系，不久雷专程拜访，向玛莎借了一笔钱后匆匆折返。玛莎对雷念念不忘，找上门去之后才发现对方实际是谋财的感情骗子，雷让接受了自己骗子身份的玛莎以亲妹的名义出现，自此二人开始使用假名四处行骗，玛莎严加防范雷和那些受骗女人发生关系，并且对待她们的手段愈发凶狠，最终发展到了杀人的地步…… 本片根据四十年代名噪一时的真实案件改编，此案被多次搬上银幕。编剧Leonard Kastle写好剧本之后在导演人选迟迟不能落实的情况下自执导筒，这也是他唯一的导演作品。
Based on real events, The Honeymoon Killers documents the exploits of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez, the notorious “Lonely Hearts Killers” of the 1940s, who preyed on women who advertised for a lover in the newspaper. Fernandez wined, dined and married them, and then (with Martha’s help) the brides mysteriously died or disappeared. The film takes liberties with the historical facts, failing to mention that both of the killers were already married, with children. It also doesn’t mention that Martha was abused as a child, or that Fernandez had a head injury resulting in brain damage – but accuracy aside, the film is a darkly comic, weird and kinky love story. This is the only adaptation where the character of Martha Beck, true to form, was played by an obese actress. Later versions have always tried to glamorize the characters (with Martha being played by Selma Hayek in one adaptation). The Honeymoon Killers is a taut thriller, but also a strangely moving romance between two very damaged people.

部电影基于买不起电视机这类仇富者的极端怀疑论，幼稚但充满乐趣。突如其来的暴力非常生猛，一如卡朋特以往作品，掏枪西部范，热衷打警察！另外，正是这部电影，沃卓斯基哥俩（那时候还是哥俩）决定让《骇客帝国》的角儿们集体戴上墨镜。
Imagine having a pair of sunglasses which, instead of protecting you from the glare of the sun, gave you x-ray vision… ideological x-ray vision! Immediately you would be able to see through (literally) all the lies fed to you by the advertising industry, the government, media and social institutions to the real messages beneath. In They Live, a stash of these sunglasses are found by an unemployed drifter, played by professional wrestler Roddy Piper (who gets some ridiculously extended fight scenes to justify this casting choice), allowing him to make a shocking discovery about the rich and powerful – and giving him a horrifying vision of who exactly is in control of society. John Carpenter actually wrote the script for Roddy after watching him wrestle, and he does perform like an alternative Arnie. Satirical, witty and thoroughly enjoyable, this classic film is a cracking piece of left-leaning Sci-Fi, with a delightful dose of 80s kitsch.
