boat 不能作主语，只能作状语。

而且坐船是 boating 坐车是by car 坐飞机是by air

从来没有by caring 和by airing的

有歧义的更多应该是 by boat 和 by the boat

by boat 是指坐船

by the boat 是指在船边上

Rick and his friends waited by the boat and were very excited.

瑞克和他的朋友们在船边等待，而且非常兴奋。
