定语是用来修饰、限定、说明名词或代词的品质与特征的。
主要有形容词、名词，此外还有代词、数词、介词短语、动词不定式（短语）、分词、定语从句等相当于形容词的词、短语或句子都可以作定语。
汉语中常用“……的”表示，定语的位置一般有两种：用在所修饰词之前的叫前置定语，用在所修饰词之后的叫后置定语，定语和中心语之间是修饰和被修饰、限制和被限制的关系
1.定语是形容词
Julia is an intelligent lady.
茱莉娅是一位聪明的女士。
It is a difficult task.
这是一项艰巨的任务。
2.定语是形容词词组
Julia is a very intelligent lady.
茱莉娅是一位非常聪明的女士。
It is the most difficult task.
这是最艰巨的一项任务。
3.定语是介词词组
Julia is a lady of intelligence.
茱莉娅是一位聪明的女士。
Julia is a lady of great intelligence.
茱莉娅是一位非常聪明的女士。
Eric is the boy from New York.
埃里克就是从纽约来的那个男孩。
He is a friend of mine.
他是我的一个朋友。
4.定语是名词所有格
Helen's hands are beautiful.
海伦的手很漂亮。
They are talking about women's rights.
他们正在谈论妇女的权利。
This is my brothers' room.
这是我兄弟(共用)的房间。
5.定语是形容词性物主代词
Her hands are soft.
她的手很软。
I like its tail.
我喜欢它的尾巴。
This is their room.
这是他们的房间。
6.定语是数词或量词
There are five books on the shelf.
架子上有五本书。
Who takes the first bite?
谁吃第一口？
Thousands of students are nearsighted.
成千上万的学生是近视。
7.定语是动词不定式
The man has nothing to say.
男人无话可说。
Daisy had a secret to keep.
黛西有一个秘密要保守。
8.定语是动词不定式短语
We just got the order to get you out of here.
我们刚刚接到要将你带离这里的命令。
She found a way to speak less.
她找到了一个少说话的方法。
9.定语是现在分词
Lucy told us an interesting story.
露西给我们讲了一个有趣的故事。
The novel has a surprising ending.
这部小说有一个令人惊讶的结局。
10.定语是现在分词短语
The movie making me laugh hard became quite popular.
那部让我捧腹大笑的电影变得很受欢迎。
There is a boy standing outisde the office.
有一个男孩站在办公室外面。
11.定语是过去分词
There is a frightened horse in the street.
街上有一匹受惊的马。
A few excited children began to shout.
几个兴奋的孩子开始叫喊起来。
12.定语是过去分词短语
The horse frightened by a mouse is running around.
被老鼠吓到的马正在到处跑。
I looked at the wall covered with their photos.
我看了看挂满了他们的相片的那面墙。
13.定语是形容词性从句
They live in a village which has only thirty households.
他们住在一个只有三十户人家的村子里。
The woman(that/who/whom) we met this morning is Tom's mother.
今天早上我们遇见的那个女人是汤姆的妈妈。
She gave me a bag in which there were bread and milk.
她给了我一个装着面包和牛奶的袋子。
定语可以分为前置定语和后置定语两种。出现在修饰对象之前的就叫作前置定语，出现在修饰对象之后的就是后置定语。观察以上例句不难发现，除了一些习惯用法，被后置的定语一般长度都比较长，内容也比较多
